About the Job:

The Organizational Setting and Reporting:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The UNEP Division of Environmental Law and Conventions internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, Regional Biodiversity, MEAs Focal Point for Africa UNEP/DELC the intern will:

Conduct legal research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, including data collection, analysis and presentation of data and information related to biodiversity MEAs, as well as the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD);

1. Undertake research and provide inputs for development of an analytical study on the impact of climate change on migratory species, including their habitats and migration routes, as well as impact of climate change on protected areas.

2. Assist in the preparation for upcoming conferences of parties (COP) to Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), including compilation of inputs to the COP and policy briefs;

3. Assist in research and analytical papers on the synergies, links, impacts and nexus between biodiversity and land issues, as well as related MEAs; and

4. Assist in the drafting of project proposals for submission to donor agencies, in coordination with MEA Secretariats, other Divisions of UNEP, and other partners, as appropriate.

OIOS is an independent office reporting to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly. The Investigations Division (ID) follows up on reports of possible violations of rules or regulations, mismanagement, misconduct, waste of resources or abuse of authority.

Duties and Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will serve as a Chief of the Investigation Unit in a particular duty station. The incumbent is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the OIOS/ID Office in the particular duty station. The incumbent :

1) Plans, organizes, conducts and/or supervises investigations of the most serious and complex cases in the field of corruption and fraud as well as sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA). This includes adducing evidence, obtaining and reviewing pertinent documentation, conducting interviews and taking statements, analyzing facts and determining findings;

2) Ensures that investigations are carried out in a timely fashion and coordinated within the work of the Division and with other organizations of the UN system, as appropriate, and develops, implements, monitors and evaluates assigned investigations;

3) Ensures the preparation of investigation reports, together with findings and recommendations and related disciplinary and jurisdictional actions, as well as evidence and materials to support such actions. Assign tasks to investigation team members to assist in carrying out the assignments;

4) Creates and maintains a case activity list of the active and open investigations for priority setting and overall case management by the Deputy Director and the Director;

5) Prepares cases for submission to the UN justice system and/or referral to relevant national jurisdictions; responds to requests for information, assistance and advice from offices and departments outside the Division; supervises intake, processing and evaluation of all new matters for jurisdiction decisions; coordinates the Division's information management to ensure conformity and relevance to UN legal requirements as applicable; has responsibility for the management and handling of evidentiary material including locating and liaising with relevant forensic institutions; liaise and coordinate between the Division and the relevant UN legal offices - Administrative Law Unit and the Office of Legal Affairs; carries out responsibilities for ensuring the legal sufficiency of planning and reporting documents of the Division including matters concerning peer reviews;

6) Liaises with other Offices' and Departments' staff and management both at Headquarters in New York and at field missions worldwide in discussing the work of the Office; the presentation of criminal or administrative disciplinary cases to national jurisdictions or administrative disciplinary bodies; providing advice and expertise on investigatory matters;

7) Oversees administrative tasks as appropriate in the duty station;

8) Carries out other tasks as may be assigned by the Deputy Director.

THE ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Write, review and edit institutional donor grant proposals, including conducting background research where required. Assist with other fundraising projects as requested (e.g. to trusts and foundations). Maintain current records in electronic and paper files, including grant tracking and reporting. Develop a sound understanding of Adeso's institutional history, competencies and programs. Assist with the identification and vetting of potential partner organizations during the proposal development process. Maintain and monitor the grant reporting database for all ongoing Adeso projects. Maintain a proposal development calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry/concept notes and proposals. Assist with the management of external consultants providing inputs to proposal development. Work closely with field staff in developing and transforming ideas into grant proposals. Assist with editing and quality control of external outputs from projects (e.g. donor narrative reports, baseline surveys, evaluation reports, etc).

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
    Bachelor's Degree in international development, social science or other relevant subject.
    Minimum 3 years directly relevant experience.
    Track record of successful non-profit fundraising/proposal development.
    Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
    Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
    Meticulous attention to detail.
