Oxford HR is helping the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, an independent private foundation, to recruit a new Africa Programmes Director, as part of their Africa senior management team. Gatsby’s Africa programmes are focused on catalysing the growth and competitiveness of key sectors in East Africa that impact large numbers of people. This is a new permanent role that reports to the Executive Director of Africa Programmes, and is one of three Programmes Directors managing sector programmes in cotton, forestry, textiles and tea, as well as Gatsby’s support to sector development institutions in East Africa.
The successful candidate will be a senior professional with substantial experience of leading the operational management of economic development programmes and/or working in a private sector consultancy. S/he will bring a deep understanding of markets and sector development, gained through experience within private companies or through roles specifically developing markets, ideally in East Africa. A strategic thinker with sound judgement, private sector DNA and ability to rapidly understand new industries/sectors or companies, s/he will have a demonstrable commitment to African development, a strong understanding of the development landscape, and be willing to travel. Strong analytical, oral and written communication skills are essential, along with an ability to engage at senior level with government and the private sector. S/he will be a self-starter with the ability to initiate and manage programmes to deadlines, bring in leading experts, and develop partnerships where necessary. S/he will be a team player attracted to working in a dynamic and non-bureaucratic environment.
